Walk at the harbor in Thorlakshofn. Boats being painted and bins of fish being filled with ice. Stongest smell of fish we have encountered.

In 1966 a new island,Surtsey, was formed from a volcanic eruption in the Westmann Islands. We could only view it from afar since they only let scientists on it.

Museum pictures of the volcano that erupted in the Westman Island in Iceland in 1973. In 6 hours they evacuated 5000 people. Many homes were destroyed. They saved their harbor by spraying water on the hot lava for days.

 

 

 

Museum rooms honoring early Icelanders that left to gather to Zion.

This is the site of the memorial to the Icelanders that left Iceland to go to Utah to build Zion. The ponds are where they were baptized.
